The southern facade of HOME Docklands Build to Rent development in Melbourne has been transformed with a new light installation. The scheme launched last year.
Located directly adjacent to Marvel Stadium at 685 La Trobe Street, HOME Docklands comprises 676 studio, one-, two- and three-bedroom apartments split across two towers of 30 and 31-storeys.
‘Quietly Flowing’, created by artist Meagan Streader and brought to life through a collaboration with Tilt Industrial Design, draws inspiration from the rhythm of water through Birrarung and surrounding waterways.
“The artwork explores the relationship between water rhythms and urban spaces. I wanted to create a piece that complements the physical site while resonating with its natural inspirations.
“The collaboration with Tilt allowed us to overcome technical hurdles while remaining true to the artistic intent. Seeing my vision transformed into this permanent installation has been incredibly rewarding.”

Curated by Craft Victoria and commissioned by Build to Rent provider HOME, the artwork embodies themes of renewal and discovery, using light to mimic water flowing around rigid forms.
The installation is part of a broader public art collection at HOME Docklands featuring works from 14 contemporary Australian artists across public and interior spaces. The project’s journey from concept to completion involved addressing complex technical challenges.

Tilt provided detailed design development, structural engineering certification, fabrication management, and installation services to realise Streader’s vision while ensuring structural integrity and longevity.
The development process involved transitioning from concrete in the original concept to a lightweight aluminum structure with a powder-coated finish. Through scale prototyping and material testing, the team achieved a fluid design that maintains its visual impact while ensuring long-term feasibility.

The installation required close coordination between Tilt and construction firm Hacer Group to address all integration requirements, from structural fixings to electrical connections, resolving the unique challenges of embedding LED artwork into an architectural setting.

The artwork creates different experiences throughout the day and night. By day, the organic curves contrast softly with the building’s concrete forms. By night, the installation transforms, its glowing lights animating the facade and reflecting Melbourne’s urban vibrancy.
