The Government of Western Australia has announced that construction of the Smith Street Build to Rent scheme in Highgate is underway. It will deliver a major boost to social and affordable housing supply close to the city.
Stage One of the development, which included the demolition of the Stirling Towers and site readiness works, recently completed. Stage Two of the Smith Street scheme will be delivered by Tetris Capital and PERKINS in partnership with Community Housing.
“It is excellent to see Stage Two of the Smith Street Build to Rent Project underway. The project will see a former public housing site transformed into new one and two-bedroom social, affordable and specialist disability rental units.
“Western Australia’s economy is the strongest in the nation, which means our population is the fastest growing in the country, too.
“That’s why working to ensure every Western Australian has a home is a priority.
“Our Government will continue to partner with the Albanese Labor Government, private industry and the community housing sector to accelerate housing supply.”

This will see the former public housing site transformed into new one and two-bedroom social, affordable and specialist disability rental units. On completion, the 109 completed apartments will be managed by Community Housing.

“With demolition completed and a builder appointed, construction on this Build-to-Rent project is underway. The development will provide social and affordable housing options close to a range of amenities including the Perth CBD, shops, public transport and parks, as well as education, sporting and entertainment facilities.

Smith Street has been identified as a key component of the Cook Labor Government’s Housing Diversity Pipeline of sites identified to deliver social housing stock in the short to medium term.

The development has received over $30m in State Government funding and a $46m contribution from the Federal Social Housing Accelerator Payment fund.
