Local Residential has launched its ‘Housemate Huddles’ initiative at the Local: Kensington Build to Rent development in Melbourne, which opened last year.
Local Residential is also offering ten weeks of free rent on two and three-bedroom apartments for leases finalised by 30 June 2025.
The Housemate Huddles program, which will run in June, offers structured matchmaking events where potential housemates can meet, tour the new two- and three-bedroom apartments, and explore shared spaces.
Scheduled for the 17, 18, and 24 June 2025, these events aim to create a stress-free alternative to the often daunting and time-consuming process of securing housemates.
Held at Local: Kensington on 348 Macaulay Road, the evenings will allow attendees to mingle, view apartments, and enjoy drinks and dinner in the development’s shared amenities, including co-working hubs, a fitness studio, and a communal kitchen.
“In a rental market where finding a decent home can be difficult and expensive, and navigating a world of strangers to try and find a housemate can quite honestly feel a bit daunting, we’re creating a public forum where housemates can meet, connect and decide if they want to move in together.
“Equally as unsettling can be moving into someone’s established home, so having the neutral territory of a brand-new apartment is an added bonus. The Housemate Huddle events are a way of bringing people together who are on the hunt for a compatible housemate, with no strings attached.”

The events will be segmented into specific groups, including female-only, queer-friendly, and mixed sessions, ensuring a welcoming environment for all participants.
The apartments at Local: Kensington come fully equipped with modern appliances such as washing machines, dryers, and induction cooktops. Renters also benefit from the community-focused design, which includes on-site maintenance, shared spaces, and savings of over $11,000 annually through included services.

Residents can expect long-term rental stability, with lease options ranging from six months to five years, further supported by Local’s B Corp certification, reflecting its commitment to secure and community-oriented housing.
Attendees of the ‘Housemate Huddles’ event will also be entered into a prize draw for incentives such as free internet or car share credits. Early registration is encouraged as demand for these innovative events grows amidst the pressures of Melbourne’s competitive rental market.
